Winter’s gone, warmer temperatures are here and it’s time to turn the sprinklers back on. To keep your systems running smooth, it’s a good idea to do a yearly spring check to make sure your irrigation is ready to go.
__ Check the Controller: Inspect your system controller. Replace the back-up battery at least once per year. Make sure the date and time are correct, so water turns on at the right time. Clean both outside and inside the controller so dust, insects, or grime does not damage it.
__ Check Valves: Inspect irrigation valves closely for damage or signs of leakage.
__ Check Sprinkler Heads: Remove dirt and debris that built up over the winter and is blocking sprinkler heads. Replace broken heads or nozzles.
__ Take a Test Run: Turn the system on and let each segment run for at least 1 minute. (Many systems have a “test run” setting you can use.) Visually check each section as it runs to check that spray is going in the right direction, no heads are blocked, drip lines aren’t cracked or broken, etc.
__ Decide if it’s time for an update: If you are constantly struggling with exposed electrical wiring, mystery leaks, broken pipes, dry spots, flooding in the yard, or any other issues that make your irrigation system ineffective, it might be time for an update.
