If you’ve just moved into a new space, or you’re seeking to update or improve your existing landscape, it’s always best to make a plan of attack before jumping into your design. We all have a general idea of what we would like to have in our space and can’t help but eye all the beautiful new plants and pots as we’re exploring the local garden center or home improvement store. When planning out our new landscaping design how do we avoid making silly or expensive mistakes?
Less is More
Just like anything in life you can have too much of a good thing. Think back to the child version of yourself that pigged out on ice cream, candy, and cake and you’ll remember the negative effects of excess. While those pretty pots may grab your eyes, you need to be selective. Too many potted plants can create clutter instead of the intended design. For example, you wouldn’t want your potted plants to block, or distract from any view that you might have or place them in groups that are disharmonious. Mismatched pots with different styles and random sizes can create design chaos. Be mindful of color, material and size and this will help you create a purposeful design.
Another thing to keep in mind is that when planting you will need to remember proper spacing and avoiding clutter. Plants grow. Even though you may have some bare spots in the beginning it will be worth it versus the waste of throwing away crowded or cluttered plants down the road.
Plant for all Year
Don’t forget there is more than spring and summer on the calendar. Last we checked there were four distinct seasons. Even though the San Joaquin and Central Valley doesn’t have as severe of weather differences as other areas, we still have to plant and plan according to season. Consider adding plants that look good year-round and planning your design according to the various seasonal changes and water needs.
Keep it Simple
Avoid cluttering your outdoor furniture design. The focus of your outdoor seating should be to experience nature, not to bring the inside out. You don’t need to add rugs and lamps. Be selective of your seating and outdoor cushions and pillows. You can still make comfortable choices that are built for the outdoors. Simple, yet comfy pillows and padding can add color, comfort and texture to your design. Just keep it simple!
Be Patient
Yes, we know you’d like to have those towering trees from your childhood home, or those fully grown, mature plants, but just like you, those took time to grow. If you try and jump start your garden with fully mature plants, you will dramatically increase your design price tag. If you’d like to keep your design within budget, be patient. Buying starter plants and giving them the time to grow will save you in the long run.
Hire a Professional
Sometimes we just need someone with a little bit of experience to help us avoid costly mistakes. Your dreams can take longer to achieve if you make unnecessary decisions early on. Hiring a landscape designer will help you utilize your space efficiently and could save you hours of wasted time and money.
