Just because winter is on its way doesn’t mean we won’t be outside, especially here in Central California. While the days are still sunny, rain and frost are in our future, which means it’s time to get your landscape ready for the weather ahead. Preparing lawns and plants is important, but don’t forget your hardscape too. Patios, decks, rock formations, retaining walls and other non-plant elements of your landscape can also be affected by winter’s weather, creating expensive and dangerous conditions.

Whether you own a commercial property, or live on a quiet residential street, here’s a few tips for winter-proofing hardscapes in Visalia and throughout Central California. While we don’t have to worry about blizzards, rain, frost and even ice can occur and cause damage to wood or concrete – or dangerous slip-and-falls – if not addressed early on.

FIRST, you’ll want to clean and store hardscape accessories, like fountains, statues and wood furniture that could be damaged by water or ice. Drain water, clean and dry thoroughly, then store in a covered dry place.

NEXT, clean all decks and patios. Get rid of dry leaves and other debris so they don’t block drainage when the first rains hit. Check the condition of your wood and apply protective finishes or sealants if needed. Loose or damaged boards or rails should be stabilized, while anything that might be damaged by water or frost should be covered and stored.

SERVICE any hardscape installations you will be using this winter such as firepits, outdoor fireplaces or outdoor kitchens. Clean, check lines and attachments, and test to make sure all is working properly.

CHECK for drainage problems. Large-installation hardscapes are prone to water buildup, unless you work with an experienced landscaping professional.

FINALLY, take a tour of your property and look for other hazards such as:

  • Potholes and cracks in walls, drives, walkways, steps, etc. Water can seep into cracks, freeze, expand and damage concrete or stone. Water puddles by day can turn into slippery frost or ice patches that cause falls. And larger cracks or chips can also be tripping hazards. Arrange for repairs now or you might be facing bigger and more expensive damage next spring.
  • Debris this is blocking drain pipes, grate covers and any areas that provide drainage for heavy rains.
  • Make sure landscape lighting systems are cleared of debris and in good working order, especially in areas around walkways and driveways. Shorter days mean more dark hours when it’s easy to trip without enough lighting.
  • Check gates, fences and handrails for disrepair or damage.
