Fresno Gardening and Landscaping has a lot to offer. There are some wonderful gardens and beautiful landscaping in Fresno and the surrounding area. It’s a place filled with people who enjoy making their homes and places of business into a place that looks great year-round. Our Fresno landscape experts and irrigation professionals often work with homeowners, business owners and landscapers in the Fresno area, so we wanted to share some great resources and organizations for anyone in the area interested in home gardening, landscaping or creating native landscapes for homes, businesses, and community.
Fresno Gardening Website
A website sponsored by the City of Fresno, Fresno Gardening.org, shares lots of great information including things like how to design and install a water-wise garden, irrigation methods and equipment to help water landscapes more efficiently, and suggestions on how to easily and effectively maintain both home gardens and business or commercial properties. A large gallery filled with colorful photos, highlights of local garden tours, and sections where you can look up plants and find resources in the area make this a great place to start for everyone from the first-time home gardener in Fresno to experienced green thumbs tackling a new landscaping project for their home or place of business in the Fresno area.
Fresno Bee Home and Garden Section
For current events, seasonal advice and input from local experts, the Fresno Bee’s Home and Garden section is a great resource to add to your reading list.
UCCE Master Gardeners
The UCCE Master Gardeners program is great for all levels of experience when it comes to gardening and landscaping in Fresno County. They offer a mix of hands-on training and classroom instruction with a mission to provide knowledge and information on home horticulture, pest management, and sustainable landscape practices to the residents of Fresno and throughout the Central San Joaquin Valley. They sponsor the popular annual Fresno Home and Garden Show, Fresno Kids’ Gardening Day, and Spring Garden Tour. They also publish a book called “A Gardeners’ Companion,” written specifically for gardening and landscaping in the Central California Valley and contains seasonal information for planting, harvesting, pruning, and maintenance for the unique climate of the Central San Joaquin Valley.
Kids’ Gardening Day
Save the date for May 12, 2018 for the annual Kids’ Gardening Day sponsored by UCCE Fresno featuring lots of fun and educational gardening/wildlife activities for children and their families. Past events have featured fun and educational hands-on activities for children including composting, vermicomposting and the always popular “Botany On Your Plate” workshops. Depending on availability, children can enjoy seeing bees, reptiles, and birds of prey and learn how they impact backyards. A bug/insect display and related activities are always a big hit with children. Hands-on activities for children of all ages may include a seed planting or transplanting activity, making a toad house to take home, and a tree leaf art/craft activity. The event is free, and you can find more information and updates online HERE as the date nears.
Country Garden Radio
Another great resource for gardening and landscape lovers in Fresno and the surrounding area is Country Garden Radio, Central California’s garden talk radio on KERN radio 1180. The hosts talk about everything from turf to trees, plants to ponds, okra to oleander, and anything else listeners ask about. Country Garden Radio is hosted by Dale Edwards, The Sultan of Sod from Old River Sod, and Lindsay Ono, The Plant Professor from Bakersfield College. If you miss their live broadcasts, they also have a podcast that can be accessed any time.
