During these colder winter months, we tend to spend a lot more time indoors and look for ways to increase the greenery in our indoor spaces. Houseplants are known for their many benefits including helping to clean the air and reducing stress. If we don’t want to negate those stress-reducing benefits we would want to consider which plants are safe for cats and dogs. Although it’s difficult to convince your pup or kitten to stop biting at your plants leaves or digging in the dirt, you’ll at least have peace of mind that the plant is non-toxic.

These gorgeous blooms produce a sweet-smelling nectar and can tolerate dry conditions. These plants with their glossy green leaves can be grown both indoors and out. They range from pink to white in color and are non-toxic.

They do well in bright light with moist, well-drained soil. These plants that resemble aloe, but fortunately for your pets, are not aloe – are safe.
- Venus Fly Trap
These otherworldly plants are known for their strange beauty and carnivorous nature. They do well in bright light and humidity. Despite their carnivorous nature they are completely safe for fido. They are more interested in gnats and small insects -win, win!
- African Violet
These low-maintenance plants with their fuzzy green leaves and blooms ranging in shades of lavender, blues, pinks, reds and white are non-toxic and beautiful. You can’t beat that!
- Spider Plant
You probably will not keep your cat or dog from playing with these grass-like leaves as they spill over their container, but they are completely safe for your curious cat or playful pup. Spider plants are hardy and can grow in a variety of conditions. They often will sprout babies…. that will create extra fun dangly cat toys…well that’s what your cat will think.
- Boston Fern
Boston ferns add classic charm to any space. They are frilly and green and love cool rooms with high humidity and indirect light. Ferns can sometimes be temperamental and higher maintenance, but this particular fern is one of the easier ones to care for and are safe for cats and dogs..
- Hibiscus
These plants love direct light and temperatures from 55 to 70 degrees. They can be trickier to care for, but totally worth it to bring a bit of the tropics into your space. The best part? These blooms are pooch and kitten friendly.
- Christmas Cactus
This easily propagated plant is low maintenance and easily adapts to low-light conditions. The Christmas cactus produces fiery blooms that can brighten up any winter, and you can safely add them to every room of your space without harming your pets.
These are just a few of the many options you can find to bring houseplants into your home without disturbing the health and harmony of your pets or your home.
