There are many gorgeous options that grow in our area and will allow you to have a drought tolerant garden that you’re dying to show off to your friends and neighbors.

Here are a few plants that we think you’ll love!

    Coneflower

The coneflower plant is perfect for zone 9 and requires low maintenance. The coneflower is often self-sowing and will thrive in almost any soil with adequate drainage. Another added perk? They attract birds and butterflies!!

    Agastache

Aside from having one of the coolest sounding names ever, this beautiful drought-tolerant plant attracts bees! We love to bring bees into our gardens. The Agastache grows 3 to 5 feet and would make a great choice for a border plant. They have gorgeous purple and white flower spikes.

    Salvia

If you’re looking for an attention-getter salvia is your winner. Salvia is tall, drought-tolerant and produces season-long color. They grow their vibrant columns from 8 to 30 inches tall. They bloom from summer into fall and can be grown in containers as well.

Lavender

Lavender is native to the Mediterranean and Middle East which explains this plants amazing drought tolerance. This fragrant, mounding plant makes an attractive addition to your drought tolerant garden.

    Russian Sage

If you’re looking for a hardy plant that not even your black thumb can kill, look at the Russian Sage. Russian Sage is a real trouper: It withstands drought, poor soil, and even cold. As long as you give your Russian Sage a sunny spot to live it will keep fighting for you.

    California Poppy

You can’t go wrong with our native flower. The California poppy is built for our landscapes. They are strong and resilient and grow best in full sun even in the poorest soil.

Licorice Plant

Are you looking for a drought resistant vine? The Licorice plant has fuzzy, silvery foliage that will weave gorgeously through your surrounding plants. When planted in partial shade to full sun it will spread out to 6 feet!

    Veronica

Veronica or speedwell is a drought-tolerant plant that reaches 1 to 2 feet high and loves well-drained soil and full sun. This is easy to grow and has beautiful white, purple, pink or blue spikes that bloom for quite a while.

    Yarrow

Yarrow is versatile and fits into a variety of spaces and soils. The Yarrow is easy to care for and displays long-lasting flowers that reinvigorate your landscape when spring bulbs are past their peak.

    Portulaca

Another low-maintenance and easy to care for plant is the Portulaca. Portulaca grows in low clusters and displays a rainbow of hues in its blooms. This plant will thrive in a sunny, hot spot where other plants can’t take the heat.
