How do you design a garden walkway of your dreams? Our backyard, or even front yard, hangouts have been even more meaningful to us as we have spent more time outdoors at the safety of our homes. We realize that dream backyards take time. You’ve invested years of gardening and landscaping to create your own garden sanctuary at home. The journey to your perfect garden oasis is achieved through a series of stepping stones. Here are some tips to create the walkway of your dreams.
-
Use wood planks
Wood planks make us think of tree house bridges! Instead of hovering in the sky or attached to a tree, you can create a plank walkway on solid ground. Lay down the wood planks in a row and fill the edges with gravel or mulch. You can also cheat and buy a pre-fab walkway too, but what’s the fun in that?
-
Use gravel mixed with stepping stones
If you can’t decide between gravel or stepping stones, why not do both? To create an elegant garden path lay the stepping stones about a step apart and then fill the spaces around them with gravel.
-
Use concrete pavers
Concrete pavers are generally cheaper than using a brick walkway and can create a similar look.
-
Use brick pavers
Herringbone or crosshatch? The pattern and layout are totally up to you, and you have endless ways to create visual interest. It is a little more work to make sure that the brick path is level and doesn’t have any major gaps. The extra work is totally worth it when you can have the much sought-after subway tile look in your garden as well.
-
Use gravel
Spread or pour loose gravel or pebbles and smooth it out. You can line the border with lumber, paving stones or plastic edging to keep it tidy. A level surface will definitely help you out here.
-
Use stepping stones
Flat pavers or stones laid out about a step apart in a row are a simple and elegant solution. Try to keep the ground under each stone level by removing any grass underneath and smoothing the earth to minimize wobbly rocks that make you topple into the hot lava.
-
Use Mosaics or spaced-out stones
Using the same concept as laying stepping stones you can create a path that is laid out like floor tile. In between each stone fill with gravel, dirt or moss. You can also use naturally shaped stones to create a tight mosaic look.
There are many ways to design a garden walkway and in the end it’s totally up to you and your personal preference and style. If you would like to discuss your ideas or could use some professional help, we would be happy to lend a hand creating the walkway of your dreams.
